Matalan is one of the UK’s leading clothing and homeware retailers offering quality fashion and homeware at up to half the equivalent high street price. Operating across 290 stores an an e-commerce site, Matalan runs a highly successful loyalty scheme (’Matalan Reward Card’) – the fourth largest in the UK, with over 12 million active members. Customers who sign up to the loyalty scheme are given a red plastic card with which to identify themselves in store, while top-tier members (who spend more than £150 a year) are given a black card. Both cards, which can be used online as well as in-store, offer members particular benefits: exclusive discount vouchers; early notice of new collections; discounts on certain lines; automatic entry to monthly competitions; and an annual birthday treat.


With UK smartphone penetration above 76%, Matalan saw the significant potential in adopting an end-to-end fully mobile-based loyalty scheme, and selected Mobilize to implement the solution.


The solution


Mobilize created a bespoke loyalty app for Matalan that Reward Card holders can download for free from the App Store (for iPhones) or Google Play (for Android phones). The new app was seamlessly integrated into Matalan’s EPOS system and e-Commerce platform.


Now, shoppers can use the app to register as a loyalty scheme member, view and redeem in-store offers and online offers and to shop online. The app offers additional features for customers including a regularly-updated savings section, a Matalan store-finder and a customer services contact channel..
